Extensions and the IRS Furlough
Even though the IRS is on furlough, your tax deadlines haven’t changed.
1️⃣ If you’re under a filing extension, you still need to file.
Even during a furlough, the IRS continues to accept electronically filed returns. If you are mailing your return, you should also keep a copy of the postmark. Late filings can still trigger penalties once operations resume.
2️⃣ An extension to file is not an extension to pay.
Any balance due should have been paid by the original deadline. Interest and penalties continue to accrue even while IRS staff are limited.
So while the IRS may be slower to respond, your obligations remain the same. Stay proactive, stay compliant, and don’t wait for operations to “fully reopen” to take care of your filings.
